Bombay High Court relief for minor rape survivor

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday allowed the termination of pregnancy of a 16-year-old rape victim. Her mother had approached the court. The court directed the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) to begin the procedure of medical termination of pregnancy at its earliest and to conduct the abortion on May 10. The woman had learned about her daughter's pregnancy after the 16-year-old complained of stomach pain and was taken to a hospital. On examination, she came to know that the fetus was already 24-weeks-old and couldn't be aborted as it had crossed the legal abortion time of 20 weeks. The woman on Monday had changed her mind, and had stated that she would like her daughter give birth to the child and then she will put up the child for abortion. The court, however, understood that the woman was confused, and hence had been given a day's time to counsel with medical social workers. Yesterday, the woman informed the court that she wants to terminate the pregnancy. Meanwhile, an officer from MCGM informed the court that KEM Hospital has a larger team of medical officers, and can handle if any complications arise.
