Centre approaches Supreme Court to redeploy troops from Darjeeling, Kalimpong

The Centre filed a plea in the Supreme Court against a Calcutta High Court order that restrained the withdrawal of Central Armed Paramilitary Forces (CAPF) from the disturbed areas of Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts of West Bengal till October 27. Representing the Center, advocate Wasim Qadri said that the forces were needed in the poll-bound states of Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat, while some were needed for internal security and to strengthen the borders at Jammu and Kashmir and other north-eastern states. Accepting the Centre's plea, Justices J Chelameswar and S Abdul Nazeer agreed to hear the matter on October 27. Qadri said that the October 17 HC order restrained the Centre from withdrawing seven of 15 companies, that were stationed to maintain law and order in the Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts of West Bengal which have been hit by an agitation for a separate Gorkhaland. West Bengal had written to the Centre seeking an extension of the deployment of the armed forces that were to be moved out by October 20. Refusing their plea, the Banerjee-led government had then sought relief from the HC. Stressing that the troops were needed elsewhere, the Centre submitted that the situation has improved in the two districts after the GJM called off its 104-day-old strike on September 2. The final call to redeploy the troops was taken after an assessment done on the basis of intelligence inputs received from other agencies.
