CJI DY Chandrachud to launch digital version of Supreme Court judgments tomorrow

CJI DY Chandrachud will officially launch the Electronic Supreme Court Reports Project tomorrow 'as a tribute to the nation in the New Year'. In yet another step forward towards fulfilling the objective of digitization of Indian Judiciary, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud will launch electronic Supreme Court Reports (e-SCR) project tomorrow. The e-SCR Project is an initiative to provide the digital version of the Supreme Court's judgments in the manner as they are reported in the official law report - 'Supreme Court Reports'. The e-SCR Project is being launched on the first working day of the new year 'as a tribute to the nation', a press release stated. The project, which will be accessible to all, will be rolled out on the Supreme Court’s website, mobile application, as well as the Judgment Portal of the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG). The move has been described as an endeavour, " ... to take a step forward towards fulfilling the objective of digitization of Indian Judiciary and underlines the vision to bring in a positive change for the benefit of all the stakeholders of justice, primarily litigants and members of the Bar as also the High Courts, National Law University, Judicial Academies, etc." The release lists the following benefits of the project: Reduction in burden of traveling and browsing through huge volumes of journals in libraries, Enhancing accessibility for those with visual disabilities Entire gamut of judgments from the inception of the Supreme Court in 1950 till date would be made available The e- SCR project will showcase replica soft copies of SCRs by utilizing the verifiable authentic soft copies as available in the PDF format. This project would create an invaluable resource as the entire gamut of judgments from the inception of the Supreme Court in the year 1950 till date would be available on e-SCR and digital repository. With the help of the National Informatics Centre (NIC) Pune, the top court has also developed a search engine comprising elastic search technique in the database of e-SCR project. The same provides for free text search, search within search, case type and case year search, Judge search, year and volume search, and bench strength search options.
