Delhi High Court directs authorities to ensure safety of doctors
Taking note of the frequent attacks on doctors in the Capital's hospitals, a bench of acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar directed authorities to take adequate measures to ensure safety and security of medical professionals. Following attacks on two resident doctors of Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) by patient's relatives, the Delhi High Court warned authorities of contempt, if adequate steps were not taken. The bench also said that it had stressed the need to provide security to doctors at public hospitals earlier because of the violence they have had to endure by patient's attendants. It has now taken a due note of the recent assault. "Violence cannot be tolerated or permitted against the doctors. Despite direction of this court to give protection to doctors, the matter has not received the attention of authorities, which it deserved. We see no reason as to why the authorities were unable to control such violence," it said, adding that the entry at hospitals should be regulated, even during the busy hours. The Centre and state government counsel requested the bench to give one opportunity to develop a strong mechanism for protecting doctors and staff of all hospitals in the national Capital. The court asked the authorities to inform it about the steps they have taken till date for the safety of doctors and also the timeline of the steps they proposed to take in this regard.
