Delhi high court seeks cops’ response on missing doctor

Delhi high court sought a reply from the police on a plea filed by the mother of the missing doctor from St Stephen's Hospital who is accused of murdering a colleague. A bench of Justices S Muralidhar and I S Mehta on Friday asked Delhi Police to file a status report on its probe into the murder, while hearing a petition filed by Vandana Gupta, mother of suspect Dr Suyash Gupta. In her writ of habeas corpus, the mother sought HC's intervention to direct cops to find their son who has been missing since the day of the murder. "The respondents must be directed to furnish information regarding last known whereabouts of the petitioner's son including relevant CDR details and CCTV footage," the petition said. Gupta also alleged that she and her family were being harassed by the police to take a polygraph test, even though they have cooperated with the investigation at each step. Delhi Police claimed that Dr Gupta has been absconding since August 25, 2017, after the murder of Dr Shashwat Pande. The police's counsel informed the court that "there is perhaps not enough cooperation extended by the parents of Dr Suyash Gupta, against whom an FIR under Section 302 IPC has been registered." When HC asked the family if they are willing to join the probe, Gupta, through her lawyer, assured the bench that they are already aiding the police in every way possible and will meet the IO of the case as often as the IO requires their presence. The court then posted the plea for December. It also struck off St Stephen's Hospital as a respondent saying at this stage, the hospital need not be a "necessary party". Gupta, however, levelled allegations against the hospital administration, saying they and police are both liable to produce their missing child and in this regard the hospital's premises must be searched thoroughly. A third-year medical student working as an intern in the radiology department of St Stephen's Hospital, Pande was found murdered inside the hospital's CT scan lab in August. His throat had been slit, presumably with a surgical blade. Get latest news & live updates on the go on your pc with News App. Download The Times of India news app for your device.
