Delhi High Court will be hearing several petitions challenging the Central Government’s Agnipath Scheme 2022 today, November 18, 2022. The matter was listed by the Delhi HC back in October. After refusing to put a stay on the matter, the High Court will resume the hearing today. The matter is expected to be heard by the bench comprising of Justices Satish Chander Sharma and Subramonium Prasad. In July 2022, Supreme Court of India transferred several petitions challenging the Agnipath Scheme 2022 to the Delhi High Court. Similar petitions will also be heard in High Courts of Kerala, Punjab and Haryana, Patna and Uttarakhand. The petitions challenge the implementation of the Agnipath Scheme 2022. Central Government announced the Agnipath Scheme on June 14, 2022. Following its announcement, large scale protests broke out in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Uttarakhand, West Bengal and various other states. The petitions challenge the duration of the scheme. Several pleas also state that the recruitment scheme is "illegal and unconstitutional". During the October 19, 2022 hearing, the Central Government had stated that it is empowered and competent enough to change the mode and method of recruitment for government services after taking into account the requirements of the military. Under the Agnipath Scheme, youths from the ages of 17.5 and 23 years will be selected and trained as Agniveers under the Indian Army, Indian Navy or Indian Air force for a period of four years. The aim behind the Agnipath Scheme was to empower the youth and encourage their participation in the armed forces of the country. The Delhi High court had listed the matter related to the Agnipath Scheme today in order to give petitioners time to file rejoinders. Keep a check here for the latest updates.
