Delhi High Court will be hearing the pleas challenging the Agnipath Scheme today, December 12, 2022. Delhi HC had stated that the petitions challenging the Central Government's scheme are a core issue and will hear the matter today. A division bench of Chief Justice of Delhi HC Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad placed the hearing for today on November 18, 2022. "Agniveer is the main matter…..core issue is the agniveer matter. "We will keep these matters on December 12 at 2:30 PM. What we will do is, whether we will finish our list or not, we will hear this case,'" stated the bench as per a Live Law Report. The petitions which challenge the Agnipath Scheme are centric to the claim that the scheme implemented by the Central government is "illegal and unconstitutional" in nature. Centre implemented and introduced the Agnipath Scheme on June 14, 2022. Under this, youths from the ages 17.5 and 23 years will be recruited as Agniveers under the Indian Army, Indian Air Force and Indian Navy. Following the introduction of the scheme, multiple protests against Agnipath broke out in states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Uttarakhand, West Bengal and others. Seeking dismissal of the petitions, Centra told Delhi HC in October that the scheme was introduced with the objective of defending India's territory, which requires an "agile, youthful and technologically sound armed forces." The Centre further stated that as compared to the rest of the world, the average age in the Indian armed forces was 32 years. Outside, the average age is 26 years. Hence, the push towards recruiting the youth of India. The High Court will adjudicate on the matter today in the afternoon. Keep a check here for the latest updates.
