Delhi-Noida Direct flyway will remain toll-free, says Supreme Court

The Supreme Court today (July 13) maintained that no tax will be levied on the Delhi-Noida Direct (DND) flyway for now. The court was hearing a plea filed by the Noida Toll Bridge Company Limited (NTBCL) against an Allahabad High Court order. The Allahabad high court had on October 26, 2016 ordered that no toll would be collected from the commuters on the 9.2 km-long, eight-lane flyway. The HC ruling had come on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the Federation of Noida Residents Welfare Associations in 2016. The DND Flyway - which is one of the better-run toll plazas - connects Delhi on the west bank of the Yamuna with Noida and east Delhi. The Income Tax (I-T) department has also filed a plea against the company for not paying tax. The apex court has asked the company to file a reply on I-T department's plea. The SC will next hear the plea on August 21. The company has been saying that the cost of the flyway's construction has not been recovered yet. The apex court had in August 2017 refused to stay an Allahabad High Court order declaring the flyway toll-free.
