DPMC chief Sharmistha Mukherjee slams AAP, BJP on tree felling row

Slamming the Aam Aadmi Party(AAP) led Delhi government and Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) led Centre government, Sharmistha Mukherjee on Friday said that the people of Delhi want to know who will be held responsible for the felling of thousands of trees before the Delhi High Court order came. The Delhi Pradesh Mahila Congress chief said, "In the whole world, while people talk about long-lasting sustainable development, in Delhi, the AAP government and the BJP at the Centre have taken the decision to fell 16,500 trees." She further alleged that both the parties have been making allegations and counter-allegations against each other without doing any constructive work. The Delhi High Court has put an interim stay on the controversial NBCC tree cutting project till July 4. In a meeting chaired by Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, the government has decided to rework and redesign the project. On this, Mukherjee questioned, "How come the government woke up to the fact about the damage that would cause to the environment by cutting thousands of trees only after felling thousands of trees? Why the government was not concerned about this issue before?" The party has also decided to come out with a White Paper in which they will depict how the Congress government, during its 15-year rule in Delhi, increased the green cover from 2.7 per cent to 22 per cent. "The White Paper will also give suggestions as to how Delhi could be made pollution-free. Ever since the BJP came to power at the Centre and the AAP in Delhi, the green cover in Delhi has been fast eroding as trees were being recklessly felled without taking into consideration the environmental issues," Sharmistha added. The Delhi Congress has additionally decided to distribute tree saplings to one thousand people, that will include intellectuals, journalists, doctors, lawyers, writers and social workers under its 'Save Tree Campaign'.
