Parties read order to suit their stand

The BJP and Congress chose to interpret the SC's order for a time-bound inquiry by CVC against CBI director Alok Verma as a win and vindication of their respective stand. Calling the order "extremely positive development" finance minister Arun Jaitley said it was in the interest of the country. "All officers of the CBI, particularly the top two, are like Caesar's wife and must be beyond suspicion," said Jaitley, justifying the government's unprecedented midnight move to send Verma and his deputy Rakesh Asthana on leave. While the blazing top gun lawyers of Congress chose to remain silent, its media in-charge Randeep Surjewala said the SC has let the truth prevail. "Its order does not allow the CVC to act as Modi government's pawn. "The Modi government's sinister attempt to capture CBI through lackeys has fallen flat. The SC order is a slap in the face of tyrants who wanted to pin the last nail in CBI's independence," Surjewala said. Former BJP leader turned Modi baiter, Yashwant Sinha described the Court's order enforcing a ceasefire in the war that was going on in the CBI. "The judges have expressed a lack of trust in the CVC," Sinha said. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said the Congress and Rahul Gandhi's core accusation was that the CVC's decision to divest Verma of his powers and appoint an interim CBI head was illegal, but the SC has not touched both the issues which vindicates the stand taken by the government. "The two prayers by Verma were that he should be reinstated immediately and the CVC was not the body to examine him, both were set aside by the SC. The only thing the Court has added is that the inquiry will be under retired SC judge Patnaik," said Patra.
