PM Modi’s security breach in Punjab: Supreme Court to hear plea seeking thorough probe today

The SC bench, headed by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, took cognisance of senior advocate Maninder Singh’s appeal that a massive breach had occurred in PM Modi’s security en route to Ferozepur in Punjab. New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India will on Friday hear a petition seeking a thorough probe into the breach in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s security cover during his Wednesday’s visit to Punjab. The SC bench, headed by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, took cognisance of senior advocate Maninder Singh’s appeal that a massive breach had occurred in PM Modi’s security en route to Ferozepur in Punjab, which led to his convoy being stranded on a flyover near Bathinda for 15-20 minutes. The Prime Minister was forced to cancel his commitments in the poll-bound state. “Serve the copy (of the petition) to the state government. We will take it tomorrow as the first item,” the bench, comprising Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli, observed on Thursday for the urgent hearing of the matter. Singh, in his plea, stated that a direction be passed to the Bathinda district judge to take possession of all available evidence of the security arrangements made by the state police force ahead of PM Modi’s visit. “Given the situation in Punjab, there should be a fair probe into the lapse and accountability fixed so that such a situation does not arise again in future,” the senior lawyer stated. “What is it that you are expecting from us?” the bench asked. “We want that such an incident is not repeated…professional and effective investigation is needed into the police bandobast under the supervision of the court. It would be appropriate given the atmosphere today. The record has to be taken by the district judge, and thereafter your lordships may decide what steps are to be taken. Please consider passing an order today itself,” the lawyer said on behalf of the government. The SC took note of the submissions and said, “Serve the copy (of the petition) to the state government. We will take it tomorrow as the first item.”
