Quinhagak teen's DNA found on body of 10 year-old murder victim

An 18 year-old Quinhagak resident is facing multiple federal charges in the death of a 10 year-old girl. KYUK radio reports charging documents allege Jordan Tyler Mark kidnapped, murdered and sexually assaulted Ida “Girlie” Aguchak in Quinhagak on March 15. According to KYUK radio, the state crime lab found Mark's DNA on Aguchak's body. Charging documents obtained by the local news outlet say Mark admitted to abducting, killing and sexually assaulting Aguchack. "Mark said that he offered Ida a ride on his way back home after dropping off his friends. Mark said that he took Ida on a trail past her house, held her when she tried to run away, and then strangled and sexually assaulted her," KYUK reports. A tribal police officer reported Aguchak missing on March 16, after she failed to return home the night before. Her body was found later that night. "Mark says that he took her body to the village dump and put her in a dumpster. Investigators also found evidence that Mark stabbed her. Mark told the investigators that he threw a knife and Ida’s cell phone out onto the tundra," KYUK reports. According to KYUK, Mark made his initial court appearance Tuesday in Bethel Superior Court. A judge set his bail at $5 million in cash and ordered him not to return to Quinhagak. A study by the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium ranked homicide the third leading cause of death among Alaska Natives aged 15-24, from 2012-2015. A 2017 study by the Urban Indian Health Institute found Alaska ranks fourth in the nation for cases of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. In November, President Donald Trump created a task force to review national protocols for data collection and review in cases of Native Americans and Alaska Natives. The group met for the first time in January and is required to submit a progress report to the president by Nov. 26, 2020.
