Supreme Court Collegium clears four names for elevation as apex court judges

The Collegium met in New on Monday and decided to recommend to the government to appoint Justices M R Shah, Hemant Gupta, Ajay Rastogi and R Subhash Reddy as Supreme Court judges. The Supreme Court Collegium has approved the names of four chief justices of High Court for elevation as judges of the apex court. The Collegium comprising five most-senior judges – Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Madan B Lokur, Kurian Joseph, A K Sikri and S A Bobde – met in New on Monday and decided to recommend to the government to appoint Justices M R Shah, Hemant Gupta, Ajay Rastogi and R Subhash Reddy as Supreme Court judges. Justice Shah is currently Chief Justice of Patna High Court, while Justice Gupta heads Madhya Pradesh High Court. Justices Reddy and Rastogi are Chief Justices of Gujarat and Tripura High Courts, respectively. The recommendation will now be send to the government which will process it. The top court currently has 24 judges against a sanctioned strength of 31. With Justices Lokur and Kurian Joseph set to retire soon, the number of judges in the top court is set to go down to 22 by year end. Justice Joseph will retire on November 29, and Justice Lokur will demit office on December 30.
