Supreme Court likely to hear Sabarimala case on February 6

The Supreme Court was expected to hear the pleas related to the case from January 22, but the date had to be postponed as one of the judges went on medical leave. The Supreme Court (SC) is expected to hear all review petitions and new developments in the Sabarimala case on February 6. While the court was expected to hear the pleas related to the case from January 22, the date had to be postponed as one of the judges went on medical leave. Earlier, a bench headed by Ranjan Gogoi had informed that Justice Indu Malhotra, who is the sole woman judge of the five-judge constitution bench, was on leave on medical grounds. The development comes amid numerous protests over women entering the Sabarimala temple. Devotees of Lord Ayyappa have revolted vehemently against granting entry to women aged between 10-50 years as mandated by the Supreme Court. Several women who have entered the temple have faced severe backlash while one of the women, Kanakadurga, was attacked by her mother-in-law. Reports suggest that as many as 51 women aged between 10 and 50 years have entered the temple after the Supreme Court's verdict. Meanwhile, the top court has declined initiating action against protestors and said the Kerala government was responsible for maintain peace and harmony. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also lashed out against protestors and said that women used to visit the temple on the first puja of every month till 1991. Meanwhile, the issue has led to a fierce political battle between the BJP and the Left government in the state. In a recent rally of BJP's youth wing in Thrissur, Kerala, Narendra Modi accused the Vijayan government of attacking the state's cultural ethos.
