Supreme Court order on J&K like freedom of speech: Former Assam CM Tarun Gogoi
Tarun Gogoi said that the Supreme Court has come to the rescue of the people of the country, and to safeguard the people's constitution provisions along with freedom of speech. Former Assam chief minister and senior Congress leader Tarun Gogoi welcomed the Supreme Court (SC) order after the apex court said that access to internet is a fundamental right. Welcoming SC order on Jammu and Kashmir internet access, Tarun Gogoi said, "It's a freedom of speech."
The SC's order was a result of hearing of a plea in connection with internet blockade in Jammu and Kashmir since August 5 in the view of abrogation of Article 370 in the Union Territories (UTs). Tarun Gogoi said that the Supreme Court has come to the rescue of the people of the country, and to safeguard the people's constitution provisions along with freedom of speech.
"The Supreme Court's order has facilitated freedom of speech. We must congratulate the Supreme Court. We have complete faith in our judiciary that safeguards our rights. We hope the government will also listen to the voices of the people and the Supreme Court. Sooner they withdraw the ban on internet better it is for the country and our democracy," Tarun Gogoi said.On the other hand, reacting over Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone's visit to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), the former Assam chief minister said that Deepika Padukone has also right to support, stand in solidarity with the JNU students or express her views. "That is her individual freedom and that freedom given by our Constitution," Tarun Gogoi said. Tarun Gogoi said that the Congress will be with Deepika Padukone. Freedom of speech, express resentment, disagree, or criticise the government, it is a part of our democracy. That is a right every citizen has been granted by our Constitution," Tarun Gogoi said.
