Supreme Court quashes 2007 defamation case against India Today Group chairman Aroon Purie

The Supreme Court quashed a defamation case filed against India Today Group Chairman and Editor-in-Chief Aroon Purie over an article that appeared in the magazine in 2007. By Srishti Ojha: In a win for India Today Group Chairman and Editor-in-Chief Aroon Purie, the Supreme Court on Monday quashed a defamation complaint filed against him in relation to an article published in India Today Magazine in 2007. A bench of the Chief Justice of India UU Lalit and Justice Bela Trivedi opined that the allegations made in the complaint completely fall short of making any case against Aroon Purie. Considering the assertions and allegations made in the complaint, the court opined that nothing specific has been attributed to Mr Purie and he cannot, therefore, be held liable for the acts allegedly committed by the author of the article. The Supreme Court accepted Aroon Purie’s appeal which challenged Delhi High Court’s 2021 order refusing to quash a defamation complaint filed against him by a former Indian diplomat and summoning order issued against him thereafter. Similar relief was granted to the public servants in the case, though not the author of the article.
